Capella University Offers New PhD in IT
Minneapolis, MN (PRWeb) February 28, 2007 -- In the next decade, three of the 10 fastest growing occupations will be in the field of information technology (IT), according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. To educate these IT leaders of the future, there is a corresponding need for PhD faculty in IT disciplines. To respond to the growing need for both IT professionals and faculty, Capella University, an accredited*, fully online university based in Minneapolis, Minn., has announced that it will offer a new PhD in information technology through its School of Business and Technology. Learners can choose a general program or a specialization in information technology education.
"I am excited to see this new PhD program, especially since there are very few institutions in the country that offer doctoral programs in IT," said Han Reichgelt, PhD, chair of the Special Interest Group for Information Technology Education of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). "I look forward to the contributions that the Capella students will ultimately make to advance the field of information technology." The PhD in IT program and its outcomes were reviewed by faculty participating in ACM's Special Interest Group for Information Technology Education (SIGITE).
Capella's PhD in IT general program of study will prepare learners for IT leadership or consulting careers, while adding to the body of knowledge in the IT discipline. The IT education specialization is intended for IT educators and subject matter experts who have a master's degree in computer science or a related field and want to pursue IT faculty positions in higher education settings.
"There is a real need for these programs, and I think the fact that they are online will further appeal to busy IT professionals and post-secondary faculty," said Kurt Linberg, PhD, dean of Capella's School of Business and Technology.
Capella is now accepting enrollment applications for its PhD in information technology. For more information, please call 1-888-CAPELLA (227-3552), option 3, or e-mail info@capella.edu. Review of this program is pending in the following states: AL, AZ, FL, GA, KY, VA, WA, and WI. Please contact an enrollment director for additional information regarding this program.
