Alumni Reunion of Atlanta, Georgia's First Public High School
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) July 18, 2007 -- Fulton High School alumni hosted two multi-class reunions earlier this year in Atlanta, GA. First at the Elk's Lodge for alumni from 1960-1994, and two weeks later classmates from 1930-1959 met at the Arab Shrine Temple. A combined total of more than 700 former classmates gathered with vows to 'keep in touch,' and to 'get together again, soon.
Atlanta native and Fulton alumni, Darlene Wofford, author of "Edgewise: An Assignment to Remember" was at both reunions greeting the guests and signing her novel. The first of three novels in her "Edgewise" series, "Seven Years 'Til Sunrise" is scheduled for release next year. Based on true events in the author's life, there are many recognizable Atlanta landmarks and locations throughout the book; i.e., Lakewood Heights, the Southeastern Fairgrounds, South Bend Park and Swimming Pool, Starlight Drive-Inn, Grant Park, etc. Fulton High is under a different name in the story, as all the names are changed to protect the innocent, and the not-so-innocent. Told through the eyes of the author's alter ego, Delaney Rutherford, the inspiring story is one of healing progression and recovery from tragic events, with prevailing triumph through the strength of unconditional love between two people. The novel has been well received by the Fulton alumni and support for their author friend continues to grow as the word spreads about her novel. The author says, "It is so great to be back in touch with my Fulton Family. I've reconnected with good friends I haven't seen in 40 or more years, and I've met new folks I didn't know in school, but I'm proud to call them my friends today. There's talk about reuniting the alumni on a regular basis, and I would like to see the reunions every year or two."
Fulton was founded in September, 1915 at the corner of Garnett and Whitehall Streets. It was from the name of these streets the school derived its colors--garnet red and white. The enrollment was 145 and the faculty consisted of the principal, six full-time teachers and several part-time instructors. At the end of the first year the school was moved to a larger commercial building at the corner of Whitehall and Trinity. The first graduating class of 1917 was composed of five members--all girls. Fulton High was the first to have a cafeteria serving lunches in 1916, the first public high school band--a 72 piece orchestra--in 1917, and introduced the military R.O.T.C. unit in 1918. In January, 1925 a fresh new school building was completed on another campus located at 345 Washington Street. Whereas there were only 5 graduates in the first class of 1916, in 1936 there were 199 graduates from a 1,387 pupil enrollment. Later a gymnasium/vocational department was added prior to moving to its final destination on Jonesboro Road in Lakewood Heights, located in southeast Atlanta. The building on Jonesboro Road was closed in 1994, and demolished in 2002. Dobbs Elementary School now stands in the place of Fulton High School, 1915-1994. In 2003 plaque was presented to Dobbs Elementary by the Fulton High Alumni Association in memory of their alma mater. Dobbs Elementary proudly displays the plaque of dedication inside their entrance hall.
The reunion for classes 1930-1959 included over 375 attendees, one a graduate of the school's 1928 class. Thelma Howell Zuker Brown was born in Fulton County on November 11, 1911. She looks forward to attending a reunion next year in proud celebration of her 80th year as a graduate/alumni of Fulton County, Atlanta, Georgia's first public high school. Let's hope her wishes are met and the alumni reconnect old friends again, who in many cases, become new friends all over again.
