The Human Capital Institute and SCU's Leavey School of Business Offer "Taboos of Leadership" Networking Event

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) September 19, 2007 -- The Human Capital Institute (HCI) (http://www.humancapitalinstitute.org/hci/home.guid), a global professional association and educator in talent management strategies, and the Executive Development Center, a division of the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University (http://www.scu.edu/business/edc/), announced today that Anthony Smith, renowned leadership consultant and author, will speak at the latest program in a series of network and learn events for Silicon Valley's business community.

The B-school breakfast event (http://www.humancapitalinstitute.org/hci/events_bschool.guid?_trainingID=1222), sponsored by Buck Consultants (http://www.buckconsultants.com/buckconsultants/), will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2007, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM PT, on the Santa Clara campus in the Benson Memorial Center, California Mission Room, at 500 El Camino Real.

Smith's presentation, "The Taboos of Leadership," is based on his new groundbreaking book of the same name. Program participants will receive a copy of "The Taboos of Leadership: The 10 Secrets No One Will Tell You About Leaders and What They Really Think" by Anthony Smith.

"When we think of cultural taboos, the usual suspects come to mind: bigotry, cheating on your taxes, and infidelity. But when Anthony Smith and his CEO clients discuss taboos, they talk about workplace and leadership issues that executives don't dare debate aloud for fear their credibility will be undermined and their reputations damaged," said Allan Schweyer, HCI's President & Executive Director. "In this program, Smith breaks the silence on the secrets leaders don't address publicly."

The presentation will explore such untouchable topics as political gamesmanship, self-centeredness, nepotism, and manipulation. Smith's objective in sharing these secrets is to provide a real understanding of how leaders make tough decisions, how they inspire fear alongside loyalty and commitment, and how attaining their positions has cost them on a personal level. By helping participants understand taboos and how difficult being at the helm of an organization really is, Smith will show leaders and those they lead how to create an interactive culture of openness, trust, and improved performance.

Anthony (Tony) Smith is Co-Founder and Managing Director of Leadership Research Institute, a consulting firm that helps Fortune 500 clients lead and transform their organizations. Smith, a coach and consultant with 20 years experience in executive development, social anthropology, and leadership design, has worked with McKinsey & Company, the National Football League, General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Coca-Cola, ESPN, The Walt Disney Company, International Paper, Deutsche Bank, Spencer Stuart, American Express, and Siemens AG, among other organizations.

Smith holds a B.A. and M.A. in the Behavioral Sciences and earned his Doctorate in Administration with an emphasis in Leadership at the University of San Diego. He was later appointed as a Post-Doctoral Fellow of social anthropology at the University of California, where he studied leadership and cultural change. Smith has also served on the teaching and research faculties of other universities, including the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and the prestigious ESCP-EAP European School of Management at Oxford.

Smith's research on leadership has appeared in several publications, including the bestselling books, "The Leader of the Future" and "The Organization of the Future," both published by the Drucker Foundation; European Management Journal; and Journal of Leadership Studies. Anthony Smith's book, "The Taboos of Leadership," is meeting with critical acclaim.
