Permanent Art Display Fosters Healing at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)

Charleston, SC (PRWEB) February 4, 2008 -- Ashley River Tower, the new state-of-the-art hospital (http://www.muschealth.com/ashleyrivertower/) at MUSC, will showcase the "Contemporary Carolina Collection," the largest collection of original, contemporary South Carolina art on permanent display.

Health professionals have known for decades that art has an impact on healing, but more recent studies indicate that the presence of art in hospitals can shorten recovery time and hospital stays, as well as reduce stress and anxiety for patients and caregivers. "Art is an important element in setting the tone for a healing environment, and it has been shown to positively influence a number of clinical measures," said MUSC President Ray Greenberg. "We chose to focus on South Carolina artists to ground the hospital in its native state and to provide a comforting and familiar environment for the patients and families that we serve."

The privately funded art collection will be included in patient and exam rooms and throughout all public areas of the new hospital (http://www.muschealth.com/multimedia/Podcasts/index.aspx?type=topic&groupid=1). The 873 original works of art can be viewed at http://artwork.musc.edu/ and include mediums such as quilts, sweetgrass baskets, sculptures, paintings, Catawba pottery and a bottle cap portrait of Philip Simmons. All 54 artists who submitted to the collection live in South Carolina and represent diverse age, race, ethnicity and backgrounds; their biographies are also posted at the Contemporary Carolina Collection website.
