After-School All-Stars of New York to Receive $6 Million Over Six Years
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 8, 2008 -- After-School All-Stars, a national organization focused on after-school programming for at-risk youth, announced today that After-School All-Stars New York (ASASNY) has been awarded two 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grants from New York State Department of Education totaling $6 million in renewable funding over five years. The grants mark the first major funding allotment awarded to ASASNY from the State of New York.
21st CCLC funds originate from a U.S. Department of Education initiative that supports the creation of community learning centers to provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend low-performing schools with high student populations from families of poverty.
Starting this month, the 21st CCLC grants will be distributed to ASASNY over a five year period and will provide $547,000 per year for after-school programs, and $698,000 per year for summer programs touching more than 1,100 youth who currently do not have access to quality out-of-school programs. The larger grant was secured with the assistance of The After School Corporation (TASC), who will handle evaluation for the program; while the smaller grant was facilitated by the School of Education at St. John's University which acts as the funding partner for ASASNY.
With the new funding, the grant increasing after-school programs will reach an additional 500 inner-city students each year with ASASNY programs located at two additional middle schools in Queens: IS 192 and JHS 217. The summer program, called Summer Times, will operate at two schools in Queens and one in the Bronx, PS 12 MS 216, and IS 313, respectively. The 21st CCLC grant allows an additional 600 students from public state-designated schools in need of improvement (SINI) to participate and also expands the presence of ASASNY into the Bronx where the chapter currently does not operate.
"We are thrilled to expand our programming with the help of these 21st CCLC funds," said Alan Fields, Executive Director of After-School All-Stars New York. "Providing comprehensive out-of-school programming for urban children is critical and we are grateful that the State of New York has selected After-School All-Stars as a partner in that effort."
A wide range of literacy-based programs, activities and services characteristic of the comprehensive ASAS model will be offered to students and families alike, including a computer lab, courses in a variety of subjects, community service, and athletics. Student and parent opinion will both be considered in deciding on program direction, which will be adjusted to better suit the students with each successive year.
"These grants are a testament to the growing strength of After-School All-Stars as a leader in the provision of quality after-school programs," added Ben Paul, CEO of After-School All-Stars. "Our New York Chapter, with the very active support of partners like St. Johns University and The After School Corporation (TASC), continues to be an innovative leader within our network of 13 cities."
