Far Too Many College Students Plans Are Ruined Because Of A Lack Of Suitable Health Insurance

For the majority of college students the last thing they think about is health insurance and this is shown in some recently published statistics that show that about one-third of all college students do not have any form of health insurance. Starting university is an expensive undertaking and simply finding the money you have to have and sorting out your college loans is difficult enough, but you must also think about including some form of health insurance along with everything else that you will need to have.

Of course you should begin by investigating your parents' health plan if this is applicable as it is quite possible that this will cover you during your time at university. You do however want to read the small print carefully as some plans will provide cover for whilst you are studying at university and other plans will not. Two items which you need to look for in particular are location and age.

Most health plans will cover children up to the age of 18 or 21 as long as you are at home and a few plans will extend this age limit as long as you are in full-time education. However, many plans are limited to providing cover within a specified geographic area and so, although you might meet the age requirements of the plan, you may find that you will not be covered when you are away from home.

When your parents' plan will not provide you with the health cover you need then you will need to organize your own student health insurance and will need to find some appropriate providers. Happily, this is not difficult and there are several insurance companies which provide plans specifically designed for students. So, where should you start your search?

The first place that you should look is your own university as colleges will normally make arrangements for their own students to get cover at preferential rates. This does not necessarily mean that this will be the best plan to meet your own needs and you will need to study the details to ensure that it does indeed meets your needs. Nonetheless your own university is an excellent place to start your search and will usually offer you the best deal. Another thing to think about when looking at your own university is exactly what medical facilities are provided on campus. Many of the larger colleges will provide first class medical facilities which are open around the clock, while the majority of the smaller colleges will have far more limited facilities.

Apart from the university itself you can look to the many health insurers as well as a number of publicly funded organizations for health cover. Additionally, do not overlook the fact that there are several different types of plan that are targeted at different student groups. Short-term health insurance for example could suit a lot of graduate students and can generally be extended after graduation to cover the period until you secure employment and become eligible for an employer's health plan. There are also supplemental plans which will cover you for things such as pre-existing medical conditions which are generally excluded from normal student cover.

Health insurance nowadays is a complex area and you will need to shop around in order to to find a plan that meets your requirements and also fits your budget. However, this is something which you should certainly not overlook because attending university is an expensive enough undertaking in the first place and you do not want to risk your future or your money because you are unable to cover the cost of injury or illness.
