Dr. Jean Brody Joins Drexel's Westphal College as Director of the Arts Administration Online Program

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) July 10, 2008 -- Former Goucher College program director Dr. Jean Brody joined the faculty of Drexel University's Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design as program director of the newly formed online master's degree in arts administration (M.S., Arts Administration). She is charged with delivering a high quality, online education by integrating management practice, theory, and practicum into the curriculum, incorporating the arts, commerce, research, and technology for a multi-disciplinary course of study. Drexel Online is a pioneer in online education since its launch in1996. Online programs are taught by the same world-renowned faculty as Drexel's on-campus courses.

"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Brody to lead this exciting new venture," said Cecelia Fitzgibbon, director of the arts administration program. "The development of this comprehensive online program will allow us to maintain our high standards in preparing leaders for the arts organization of tomorrow. We expect that the program will attract students from across the country, many of whom do not have access to graduate education in arts administration in their immediate area. Dr. Brody's experience will be an important asset."

For the past six years, Brody served as director of the masters of arts in arts administration program at Goucher College. While at Goucher College, Brody developed a curriculum with a distinct focus on the role arts serve in the community. Her involvement in community arts included a study of political theatre in Latin America and an intensive study with Augusto Boal. Using Boal-based techniques, she co-founded Theatre Dynamics, which brought participatory social action theatre to a variety of arts and social service organizations in the Philadelphia and beyond.

"I look forward to creating an online program that will duplicate the quality and intensity of the existing arts administration master's program at Drexel, but will use the latest tools and techniques for online pedagogy and communication to build a vibrant learning community," said Brody. "The online faculty will draw from top leaders in the Philadelphia arts world and from around the nation. The program will seek to understand the many areas in which the arts can contribute to the human experience: aesthetic, personal, interpersonal, community-wide, and society as a whole."

Brody has worked extensively in the arts for nearly 30 years as a professor, a consultant, a production dramaturg, a director and literary manager. She was an assistant professor of theater at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. and worked as the director of development for The Point Breeze Performing Arts Center and The Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival. Additionally, she has consulted for The Bach Festival of Philadelphia, The Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia and the People's Light and Theater Company. Brody holds a bachelor's degree in literature from Yale College and a master's and doctor of fine arts in dramaturgy and dramatic criticism from The Yale School of Drama.
